Before we go further into me ruining your day  it is imperative, that we go over into what definitions are, and why the term side gig, is a not a adequate  term to use in regards to your second job or small business.  

1. Most businesses fail.

Most businesses fail; in fact, 96% of businesses fail within the first ten years, and approximately half within the first five years. And a third of them were within the first two years. The truth to this comes from a lack of planning, financial capital, and time commitment. It is really easy to say you are investing in yourself and your dream, but a business is more than the things an individual like. Businesses need finances, budgets, logistics, marketing, securities, employees, etc. Very few start-ups or individuals if the business you are pursuing is a sole proprietorship. 2. You are unlikely to recieve support from those closest.

Well… I suppose we should clarify.  This doesn’t mean you won’t receive any support from friends or loved ones. You are more likely to receive support or investments from strangers than your closest relatives.  This phenomenon comes from the fact that we as human beings make our judgements from past experiences, your closest friends and family see you not only at your best times but also see you for at your worst.

 

They seldomly, if at all, see you as the professional that you are. These past experiences can accumulate and make suggestions that you are not the best person to invest in. However, with a stranger, hopefully, one who hasn’t seen you crying drunk on the bathroom floor when the “Love of your life” broke your heart.  They will see you more objectively and see your business idea for what it is a business idea. I guess the best way to understand this phenomenon is “First impression is the last impression”. So in future endeavours, understand that most MLMs and other side gigs or scams make you try to 

3. You have Limited time, resources, and energy

See, we only have 24 hours a day between the forty-hour work week.  Just to make ends meat, the time it takes to get ready and to and from work,  and this is not including stressors of having children as most Americans have as well. The bottom line is with whatever time is available and that time should be spent on yourself and relaxation. That time however, isn’t enough to make anything profitable. 

4. A further increased barrier to entry

In business there is a term known as barrier to entry, this is the required capital needed to do the capitalism. However, in the U.S. there is this concept referred to as corporate lobbying, and essentially what happens is large corporations bribe the U.S. government officials legally.  For the benefit of there company’s market strategy. It doesn’t even matter what side or for what reason you vote for. Raising minimum wage to keep up inflation or paying the workers a “Living Wage”  which really just means raise the barrier of entry so smaller business can’t have as successful talent acquisition. Or the republicans, “Right to hire” is more really just a right to fire employees and take away the safety net of workers. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter who you vote for large corporations always wins.

5. ) The problem with the gig economy and taxes

The pro’s of the egig economy is that any person can get a second job doing pretty much anything, from anywhere so they can make some extra cash on the side. Which is a good thing. However, most gig economies make you fill out a 1099 form instead of a W-2 which means you are responsible for paying the taxes not your employer.

  On top of this business practice you are usually responsible for all the upkeep, for example with your car, so its money out of your wallet when you factor in things like gas, insurance, labor. If anything you are taking on the majority of the risk, and labor yet getting the least amount in the reward it’s really overalll just a bad business deal that large tech companies pray on individuals who really need the extra money.
