A history of Chess

Chess, is a beautiful game with a long, deep, and complex history. With games that always tetter  on a knifes edge, and is popular world wide and can be played virtually everywhere.  You can find people playing chess anywhere, from million- dollar mansions, at schools, at the public park and even in prisons. Chess, is such a popular game you can go to websites like Chess.com or Lichess.organd play with anyone all around the world in just a couple of seconds.

However, did you know that Chess is also being used to assist computer science and mathematics?  Although chess might be a breath taking game of the past, it may also be the door way into the future. But before we get into that let’s take a look at the history of chess, then will talk about how chess may be humanities future.

A Game of War

chaturanga ( चतुरङ्ग ) is a two person strategy war game that was played in 600 C.E. and is believed to be the common ancestor game of chess. This game was played primarily in the Gupta Empire.  It was then adopted in  Sassanid Persia being called chatrang, It is commonly believed that charatang Was then brought to Europe through Persian trade, which lead to Chess in late  Medieval Europe

Chess, before the 1500's was a lot more slower paced then it was today. The queen ( Ferz) , and the bishop were the weakest pieces on the board. The games was so slow considerably that young couples would often use playing a game of chess for some alone and intament  time together. 

The Morals of Chess

In 1750 one of America's founding fathers ' Benjamin Franklin wrote a book called the Morals of chess, and from there in America, ( United States)  He the Later goes on to explain the enlightenment of chess and how it relates to life and its universality among cultures. This article is possibly one of the strongest reasons for the popularity for chess, and why at first glance chess seems to be seen as this upper class game for intellectuals.  

Chess is one of the oldest and most popular games in the world. But did you know that this game is also being studied to help build the world around you?  Now I know you are wondering what such a archaic game has to do with the world we see to day, well the answer is simple or rather I think we should say complex. In Mathematics and computer science their is a field known as computational complexity theory , ( god that is a mouthful )  and what this field focuses on is complexity and solvability. Sounds kind of strange  but bear with me just a moment. In laymen’s terms we can see things as easy problems and hard problems.

 

For example a easy problem to figure out it 2+2=4 with simple algebra we can prove it to be true, since if we combine like terms on the left side to be 4 we have 4=4 and if we subtract 4 on both sides we end up with 0=0 . all  mathematical statements that are equal will end up  reducing to 0=0 if the expression is mathematically true. See it was easy to solve and easy to prove, in terms of someone who studies computational complexity theory this would have been solvable in polynomial time or P
